On Friday, June 6, 2025, in Los Angeles, California, an ICE raid was conducted to detain working-class individuals engaged in their daily lives at a local Home Depot near the intersection of Compton and Paramount Streets. This incident served as a stark reminder of how suddenly and dramatically immigration enforcement can intrude upon the daily lives of working-class individuals.

California is home to a vibrant and diverse immigrant community, with approximately 10.6 million immigrants residing in the state, making up about 27% of its total population – the largest percentage of any state in the U.S. These immigrants make significant positive contributions to the Golden State’s economy and society. Indeed, if California were its own nation, its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of over $4.1 trillion would rank it as the fourth largest economy in the world, a testament to its economic power. Immigrants are a vital part of this powerhouse labor force, comprising over a third of California’s workers and playing crucial roles in industries like agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and general services. Immigrants are also a driving force in entrepreneurship, with a disproportionately high share of business owners and a substantial number of STEM workers and healthcare professionals. Beyond their direct labor contributions, immigrant households pay billions of dollars in federal, state, and local taxes annually, and their collective spending power further stimulates local economies, supporting businesses and creating jobs across California. Their cultural diversity also enriches the state’s social fabric, contributing to its unique character and global connections.
