Subject: Important: Let’s Talk TikTok – Responsible Sharing & Community Guidelines
Hi everyone,
I’m writing to you today about a really important topic that’s come up recently, and it’s something we all need to understand to keep our TikTok experience positive and to protect our accounts. As you know, two of our group members unfortunately had their TikTok accounts banned, and it was directly related to not adhering to TikTok’s Community Guidelines around sharing, posting, and reposting content, especially other people’s intellectual property.
This isn’t a lecture, but a learning opportunity for all of us. Even those who feel they have a good grasp of online file and post sharing can benefit from a refresher, because platform guidelines can be quite specific. Let’s make sure we’re all on the same page.
The Golden Rule: Original Content is King!
First and foremost, TikTok, like most platforms, deeply values original content. The creators who pour their time and creativity into making unique videos are the lifeblood of the platform. When you create something new, you contribute to that vibrant community.
Understanding Sharing vs. Reposting vs. Saving: What’s the Difference?
It’s easy to get these confused, but their proper use is critical:
- Sharing (via the Share Arrow): This is the intended way to spread content you enjoy while giving credit. When you hit the “Share” arrow (often looks like a curved arrow pointing right or “…” leading to share options), you can send the video directly to friends, other apps, or your own TikTok Story (which often includes attribution). This is usually perfectly fine and encouraged.
- Reposting (via TikTok’s official “Repost” feature): TikTok has an official “Repost” button (often located with the share options). When you use this specific feature, the video is shared to your “For You” page followers with clear attribution to the original creator. It’s designed to give the original creator credit and promote their content. This is the best and safest way to repost someone else’s work on TikTok itself, as it adheres to their attribution system.
- The “Save” Button (also known as “Download”): This button allows you to download a video directly to your device’s camera roll. This is where things can go wrong if not used carefully. While you can save videos, downloading a video and then re-uploading it as if it were your own original content (without significant transformative editing, clear attribution, and often explicit permission) is a violation of intellectual property rights and TikTok’s guidelines.
TikTok’s Stance on Intellectual Property & Reposting (Brief Snapshot from Guidelines):
TikTok’s Community Guidelines are clear: - “You should only upload content that you’ve created or that you’re authorized to use. This means you must not upload content that infringes on anyone else’s intellectual property rights, such as copyright or trademark.”
- “Repeated intellectual property infringement will lead to account termination.”
This is precisely what led to our members’ accounts being banned. Downloading someone else’s video and then re-uploading it to your own profile without proper authorization or significant transformation is often seen as copyright infringement, or at the very least, a violation of their policy on “originality” and “intellectual property.”
Encouraging Good Online Citizenship: - Always Give Credit Where Credit Is Due: If you’re genuinely inspired by someone’s work and want to share it in a way that goes beyond the official “Repost” feature (e.g., in a reaction video), ensure you give clear, prominent, and undeniable credit to the original creator in your caption and, ideally, visually on screen (e.g., tagging them, mentioning their name). Even then, understand that creators can still report your content if they feel their rights are being infringed.
- Transformative Use: If you’re building on someone else’s work, think about whether your new content is “transformative” – does it add new meaning, message, or expression? Simply re-uploading with a new caption is generally not transformative.
- Respect the “No Download” Setting: Some creators disable the save/download option. This is a clear signal that they do not want their content downloaded and re-used. Respect this setting.
- Report, Don’t Re-Upload: If you see content violating guidelines, use TikTok’s reporting features instead of trying to “correct” it by re-uploading.
A Note on Prolific Posters & Spammers:
While the bans were due to intellectual property violations, it’s also important to remember that prolific posting of unoriginal content, especially if it’s identical or very similar to existing viral content without adding value, can sometimes be flagged by algorithms as spam-like behavior. Good online citizenship also means contributing meaningfully and not overwhelming feeds with repetitive or low-effort content, though this is usually secondary to direct IP infringement in terms of ban severity.
Let’s all learn from this. Our group thrives on creativity and respect. By understanding and adhering to TikTok’s guidelines, we can ensure our collective experience on the platform remains fun, fair, and free from bans. If you have any questions, please ask!
Thanks for your understanding,
