The Weaponization of Justice: An Age of Political Retribution

As the world wakes up on this Thursday in January 2026, we are greeted not by justice, but by a chilling confirmation of what many of us have feared. The arrest of independent journalist Don Lemon in St. Paul, Minnesota, is not just a legal headline—it is a siren screaming that the guardrails of our democracy have been dismantled.

We are witnessing the raw, unfiltered weaponization of the American legal system.

The “Crime” of Journalism

The facts of the incident are as clear as they are disturbing. Don Lemon was present at the “Cities Church” in St. Paul, covering a protest against the Administration’s aggressive immigration crackdown. The target of the protest was a pastor alleged to be a top official in the Trump administration’s local ICE enforcement office.

Lemon was not there to protest. He was there to witness. He was livestreaming—performing the constitutionally protected act of journalism.

Yet, he is now in federal custody.

The “behind the scenes” machinations of this arrest expose the corruption at the heart of the Department of Justice. Initially, a federal magistrate judge—a bulwark of actual law—refused to sign off on the arrest warrant. This was a rare and stinging rebuke, signaling a total lack of probable cause.

In a functioning democracy, that would be the end of it. But in the current “regime disguised as an administration,” the DOJ simply went judge-shopping. They hunted until they found a signature that would legitimize the illegitimate. They bypassed the check on their power to ensure the arrest happened. This isn’t law enforcement; it is a “criminal conspiracy” of the state against the First Amendment.

A Dirty Laundry List of Political Retribution

This moment did not happen in a vacuum. It is the culmination of a years-long purge of dissenting voices from the corporate media landscape. To understand why Don Lemon was in that church as an independent reporter, we have to look back at the systematic silencing of professional journalists.

The Purge of 2023

We cannot forget April 24, 2023. After 17 years, Don Lemon was ousted from CNN. While the network cited internal tensions and a controversial comment regarding Nikki Haley, the timing was impeccable for those who wanted a “centrist” media compliant with rising right-wing pressure.

But Don is not alone. He is part of a growing fraternity of truth-tellers who have been pushed out of the corporate towers and into the independent trenches.

The List of the Silenced

Look at this roster of professionals who were forced to pivot because they refused to play the game of “both-sidesism” in the face of authoritarianism:

  1. Don Lemon: Forced into independence, now arrested for doing the job CNN wouldn’t let him do.
  2. Mehdi Hasan: His show was canceled by MSNBC in 2024. Why? Because he dared to question foreign policy and political narratives with a rigor that made corporate sponsors uncomfortable. He founded Zeteo to speak freely.
  3. Brian Stelter: The former host of Reliable Sources was a constant target of the 45th Administration. CNN fired him in 2022 in a desperate bid to appease conservative critics.
  4. Tiffany Cross: Her contract was slashed after she became a target of Tucker Carlson and right-wing media for her unapologetic focus on race and justice.
  5. John Harwood: A veteran White House correspondent who exited CNN abruptly in 2022, moments after calling Donald Trump a “demagogue” on live TV.
  6. Roland Martin: He left the constraints of cable news to build the Black Star Network, refusing to let his coverage of systemic racism be diluted by corporate editors.
  7. Keith Olbermann: An early warning siren. He left the mainstream to critique the “Trump regime” without the muzzle of network neutrality.

 Unite for Democracy

We cannot afford to be spectators in the demolition of our own rights. The arrest of a journalist for the crime of reporting is the final red line.
